Octopus Powerloop V2G

OCTOPUS ELECTRIC VEHICLES POWERLOOP V2G

Octopus Electric Vehicles Powerloop V2G Trial
Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) is an innovative home energy management system, incorporating a constant energy cycle, whereby electricity flows from a house to an electric vehicle's battery, and from the EV's battery to the national grid. Powerloop was developed by a consortium run by Octopus Electric Vehicles and Octopus Energy in partnership with Energy Saving Trust, CPS, UK Power Networks (UKPN), Guidehouse and Open Energi, enabling 135 electric vehicles to become both generators and consumers of electricity. Smart charging and V2G will bring significant flexibility to the grid as the system transitions to net zero.

Octopus EVs Powerloop V2G

By combining a bi-directional charger and a stationary Nissan LEAF's unused electric battery, Powerloop supports the decarbonisation of transport and enables an EV owner to use their car as an integrated energy asset, connected to both the home and the national grid, supporting grid stability. Powerloop helps unlock the potential of stored renewable energy in your car battery and feeds it back to the grid during peak demand times. Powerloop is funded by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles with Innovate UK acting as delivery partner. The data collected is used to directly shape strategies for incorporating V2G as a part of the UK's decarbonisation strategy.

Powerloop V2G Trial

The trial has been taking place in UKPN's operating area, where leased Nissan LEAFs have been paired with Quasar V2G chargers to permit electric vehicle drivers to export power from their cars to the grid. If drivers use this bi-directional charging technology a sufficient number of times per month they can make money back from it. Throughout the trial real world data has been gathered to illustrate the potential of using vehicle-to-grid technology to convert an EV's battery into a mobile energy asset. The Powerloop App integrates with the Nissan LEAF and the Wallbox Quasar charger, allowing customers to simply tell Octopus when they need their car charged and by how much. The app and the system behind it also control the discharge of the car battery according to the needs of the grid. Powerloop comes with a 12-month fixed rate 100% renewable electricity energy tariff from Octopus Energy, with rates depending on location.

The Powerloop trial has now reached capacity and is closed to new customers, but to find out more about Powerloop, please visit the Octopus Electric Vehicles website. EV owners may also be interested in the Octopus Electric Juice Network and you can learn more about vehicle leasing on my Octopus Electric Vehicles page.
