Octopus Prepayment Meters

What Are Prepayment Meters?
Prepayment meters are electricity and gas meters which allow you to pay for your energy on a pay-as-you-go basis. With prepayment meters you pay upfront for your electricity or gas and top-up via a key, token or smart card at newsagents, recognised PayPoint or Payzone shops, post offices, garages or sometimes online, via a smartphone app or over the phone.

Can I Switch To Octopus On A Pay-As-You-Go Tariff With A Smart Prepayment Meter?
Yes, Octopus Energy now support smart prepayment. You can top up your electricity and gas meters via your Octopus account, through the Octopus mobile app or at any PayPoint store.

Can I Swap My Prepayment Meter For An Octopus Standard/Credit Meter?
Previously Octopus would not change a pay-as-you-go prepayment meter to a standard/credit meter as soon as you switched to them, but would do so once you'd been on supply with Octopus for 3-4 months so long as you didn't have any debt on your meter and passed a credit check. That was free of charge and you'd receive a smart meter. If you'd now like to make such a meter swap, Octopus ask you to contact them.

What Happens If My Prepayment Meter Has Day And Night Tariffs?
If your existing setup has both day and night tariffs, upon switching to Octopus the meter itself will remain 2-rate, just use the Octopus key to top it up after your switch completes and you'll be billed on the appropriate prepayment tariff. Octopus will send you their keys to use, but you can continue to use your existing one until it arrives.

What If I'm Still In Credit And Want To Switch? When Should I Start Using My New Key/Card?
You can still run down credit after you've switched to Octopus. Remember to use the remaining credit on your old supplier's electricity key before you first use your Octopus electricity key, so you don't lose any credit on the meter. For gas, you can swap your card at any time. Doing so won’t wipe your remaining credit, so you can pop your card in your meter as soon as you’ve topped it up. It’s worth hanging on to your old gas card (your gas meter is able to recognise two cards) as you never know when it’ll come in handy.

Can I Switch To Octopus With Debt On The Meter?
Previously if you owed money on your meter you needed to clear this before signing up to Octopus, otherwise your old supplier may have objected to your switch, causing severe delays. If you were having trouble paying back your debt, your energy provider could arrange for a payment plan, which would still allow you to switch. Currently you can transfer debt from a previous supplier to Octopus and pay it back at a default rate of £3.50 per week, although you can contact Octopus to change the amount.

What Happens If I've Moved House And There's Debt On My New Meter?
If you’ve just moved into a property and there's debt on your meter from the previous occupier, you should let the current supplier know. They’ll be able to wipe this for you. Octopus provide instructions here.

What Do I Do If My Octopus Prepayment Meter Is Running Out Of Credit?
Your prepayment meter switches itself off when you run out of credit. On a traditional prepayment meter, once you are down to the last £1 of your electricity credit or last £2 of your gas credit, you just need to insert your electricity key or gas card to activate the emergency credit. Your gas meter has £20 emergency credit and your electricity meter has £10 emergency credit. If you have a smart prepayment meter, £10 emergency credit is available for both gas and electricity and you can activate it on your in-home display. Payment for emergency credit will be taken in full next time you top up.

Friendly credit is also available for prepayment meters if you run out of credit (or emergency credit) during evenings, weekends or Bank Holidays. The Octopus friendly credit hours are from Monday to Friday 4pm to 10am (GMT), all weekend (so from 4pm Friday to 10am Monday) and all day on Bank Holidays (over Christmas friendly credit will extend from 4pm on December 24th to 10am on December 29th). If you run out of credit during these times, your electricity or gas won't shut off. Instead, the cost of any energy you use will be added onto your meter as debt, and will then be deducted the next time you top-up. You'll move automatically onto friendly credit if you hit £0 on your meter.

So How Do I Switch To Octopus Prepayment And Gain Up To £75?
Just click on my Octopus Energy referral link below to get a quote. Be sure to click "Got a prepayment meter?" in question 3. Then continue with the application or contact Octopus if so instructed. My referral link is https://share.octopus.energy/ivory-jade-264 should you need to supply it at any time and you can get in touch via my contact form should you require any further details.

Octopus Energy arrange prepayment customer referral rewards after your first pay-as-you-go top-up. For traditional prepay customers Octopus can either send a refund via direct debit or send a key or card with £50 pre-loaded credit. If you're on smart PAYG, £50 referral credit is added to your smart prepay meter.
