The History

Affect Energy was set up in 2016 by CEO John Szymik and was sold in 2018 to Octopus Energy, a company whose values they aligned with. As part of the deal they agreed that the Affect Energy team would move across to Octopus Energy and that Octopus would invest in growing the Brighton-based team, an agreement that has been honoured and exceeded. At this point in time Octopus were starting their smart meter rollout, something that the Affect Energy team by then had good experience of. Both companies were really frustrated with outdated models and poor customer experience, so were determined to shake things up. Consequently Octopus Energy Services was set up as an in-house energy services provider for Octopus Energy customers.

The Service

Octopus Energy Services employees come from all sorts of incredible backgrounds and are used to dealing with customers in difficult situations. Having started the business from scratch, OES are selective about who they approach and are incredibly picky and determined to find the right people. They test heavily for 'soft' skills, the right behaviours and attitude during the interview processes. OES engineers have the training, tools and experience to do the job safely and competently, whilst striking an equal balance between those things. Customers in this industry are used to being put on hold and then to be passed from department to department in an attempt to have their query resolved. That doesn't happen here. OES Energy Specialists are trained to deal with the full range of enquiries a customer might have, meaning they can usually deal with problems quickly and give people the solution that they need. Because of the close link between Octopus Energy and OES, they generally have a detailed account of what the problem is, and can send someone who is qualified to solve it. Not all customers are happy at the start of the process, but they’re generally happy by the end of it.
