What Is Octopus Power-ups?
Octopus are offering free electricity to homes in areas with lots of green generation, so they can to use up that spare solar and wind when it's most plentiful. This cutting-edge flexibility service helps to balance local networks and funds free electricity for areas where there’s regularly extra renewable energy wasted and green generators are paid to switch off.
How Do Power-ups Work?
Power-ups usually last an hour or two and take place when wind and solar make up a high proportion of the electricity mix. This is often in the middle of the day. Octopus will usually let you know the day before.
How Much Electricity Can I Use?
You can use as much electricity as you like and it'll all be free. Charge your electric vehicle, do the hoovering, run your immersion heater or heat pump, switch on the washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher, anything you like.
What Happens To My Bill?
Octopus will calculate how much you used during each Power-up and pay you back as account credit every few weeks, so that any electricity you use in Power-ups will be completely free of charge.
Am I Eligible For Power-ups?
You need to be an Octopus Energy customer with a connected smart electricity meter, from which Octopus have received 80% of your half-hourly readings in the last 20 days. However Power-ups are only available in some areas in England, because this is a joint project with the local network operator UK Power Networks. Currently these are all in South East and East England. You can check for your post code here.
Is Power-ups Available In Other Areas?
There's a trial currently running in Scotland with the National Grid ESO. It works slightly differently in that only electricity you use above your norm is totally free. Octopus work out your normal energy use at the time of each Power-up, measure how much energy you use in the Power-up itself and pay you the difference. i.e. the electricity you use over and above your usual amount. Octopus are talking to other operators across the UK about rolling out Power-ups, so if you'd like Power-ups in your area, you can add your details via this form.
How Do I Apply For Octopus Power-ups?
