Smart Meters

OCTOPUS ENERGY SMART METERS

Octopus Energy Smart Meters
Smart meters are next-generation gas and electricity meters which offer a number of benefits over traditional meters. They send your usage information automatically to your supplier, so no more estimated bills and you should pay for only what you use. A small wireless in-home display monitors your energy use and shows how much it costs in near real time, giving readings in both pounds and pence and kilowatt hours (kWh), so you can see where and when you're using most energy.

When can I have a smart meter installed?
Eligible Octopus customers can book a smart meter installation appointment from within their online energy account. Installations will be largely done area-by-area, which means you'll need to wait until Octopus are installing in your area. Installation of smart meters is free of charge but not compulsory.

What if I already have a SMETS1 smart meter?
Only the first generation of smart meters (SMETS1) manufactured by Secure can communicate smartly when a customer changes supplier, so some users have had to revert to giving readings manually after they've switched. These dumb SMETS1 meters are currently being enrolled in the new DDC data network and should regain their smart features at some point. If that proves to be impossible for any particular brand of SMETS1 meters, then Octopus will be able to replace those meters with new SMETS2 meters.

What about smart prepayment meters?
Yes, Octopus also support smart prepayment meters.

Which Octopus Tariffs Can I Use With My Smart Meter?
Octopus offers an impressive range of innovative smart tariffs, including the following:
1) Outgoing Octopus is the UK's first smart export tariff, allowing you to get paid for the energy you produce at home. It's perfect for those with solar panels, battery storage, or any other way of sharing energy back to the grid. Outgoing Agile matches your half-hourly prices with day-ahead wholesale rates.
2) Octopus Smart Export Guarantee is an export tariff whereby you're paid a flat rate for home-generated electricity you sell to the grid. It's ideal for those with solar PV, a wind turbine or home storage batteries who'd like to use a different tariff for the energy they import from the grid.
3) Octopus Go customers get super-cheap, green electricity for 4 hours every night for 9.5p/kWh between 12:30am and 4:30am, so they can charge up their EV for a tenth of the price of a traditional car, keeping charging costs as low as 2p per mile (with a fixed price for the rest of the day). It's a great tariff for anyone who can shift their usage to these off-peak hours. e.g. home storage battery owners. Octopus Go Green is currently for Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT, Skoda and Cupra EV owners only. The tariff is the same as Octopus Go, but Octopus purchase energy directly from renewable generators. Octopus Go Faster is currently unavailable.
4) Intelligent Octopus is a smart time-of-use beta EV tariff with 6 hours of low cost charging at just 7.5p/kWh between 11.30pm and 5.30am. Just specify how much charge you need in your car (and for when) and your vehicle will be smart-charged when the grid is at its cheapest and greenest.
5) Agile Octopus is another beta smart tariff, offering customers electricity prices which change every 30 minutes, based on the wholesale price of energy. Outside of peak hours (usually 4pm-7pm), wholesale energy tends to be a lot cheaper and greener. On Agile, if you can shift when you use power outside of these busy times, you can access cheap ‘off-peak’ prices and potentially save money, while using the greenest electricity available and reducing strain on the national grid. Agile is perfect for people with electric cars, heat pumps, home batteries and any other big energy-intensive appliances.
6) Cosy Octopus is a 3-rate tariff specifically for properties with heat pumps. It offers mega cheap electricity during two 3-hour time slots, so owners can shift their heat pump use to off-peak periods.
7) Octopus Flux is a 3-rate import and export tariff for properties with solar panels and battery storage, so customers get optimal rates for consuming and selling their electricity.
8) Octopus Fan Club allows customers to receive 100% renewable electricity produced by their local Octopus wind turbines, direct to their homes, with discounts of up to 50% when the turbines are spinning.
